Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gumline. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when it comes to brushing the teeth.
When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gumline and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental health.
If you do not act to prevent or treat gum disease, it can threaten your teeth, since gum recession will limit the supportive structure of healthy teeth. Periodontal disease not only causes tooth loss, but it also causes other, less well-known problems. Colorado Advanced Dentistry offers modern alternatives to gum grafting techniques so that you can get the care you need without fear of a painful procedure.

LANAP gum surgery is a deep cleaning of the gum tissue at the microbial (germ) level. Pulsed laser light will remove diseased tissue and destroy harmful bacteria to clear away gum infection. Any bacterial buildup on the roots of your teeth is removed using scaling instruments. Finally, the laser is used to promote clotting and proper healing of the treated tissues. Many patients feel well enough to return to work or normal daily activities after LANAP treatment.
To perform the technique, a dental surgeon uses a needle to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, the gum tissue is gently loosened by special instruments that help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. With no cutting, stitching, or grafts required, you can expect minimal swelling, pain, and bleeding after the gum treatment is complete.
